In Execution
PROJECT: The project “Scaletto senza scalini” dates from 2010 in one of the most popular public beaches in the city of Savona, “Il Scaletto” (There, more than two centuries ago, the fishermen used to leave their small boats used to prepare their nets and to unloaded the fish). The aim of this project, which is pioneer in Italy, was to give free access to the sea to differently abled people and to provide an escort service to those who have never bathe in the sea. In the first edition the Parodi Foundation provided the necessary material to guarantee the access to the sea, to equip the changing-rooms and it also provided special deck chairs and gazebos needed to give a complete service.
In the following editions, the Parodi Foundation contributed to support the lifeguard salaries and to give additional material due to the Project growth.
During the last edition in summer 2013, it was achieved a record of 1375 entries to the sea, to go with 186 people with different motor abilities who not only came from the Liguria region but also from Piemonte, Lombardia, Toscana, Val d’Aosta, Emilia Romagna y Lazio. They were between 7 and 96 years old.
This Project was organized and directed by the Cooperative Social “Laltromare”, which means “The other sea” in Italian. This social cooperative has the particular feature of being formed by people with different motor abilities, giving them a job, which is a way to dignify their life, and a possibility of social integration so that they can establish in the territory.
It is important to note that during the last edition we carried out an internship program for minors with social problems by signing two agreements. One of them with the Ligure Association for minors in Geneva and the other one with the Minors Criminal Institute from the Ministry of Justice in Liguria. This way not only did the project offer an important service for differently abled people to relaxed but it guaranteed jobs to 29 people as well, 17 of them were people on risk of social exclusion.
To sum up, the following were the activities carried out through the Project:
1) Access improvement in the accreditation area.
2) Installation of a synthetic carpet to let the wheelchair to roll to the coast.
3) Building of a changing-room with a shower for differently abled people.
4) Purchase of special wheelchairs that allow the enter to the sea
5) Purchase of special lifejackets for the lifeguards to help disabled people with complete safety.
6) Training for those people specialized in helping differently abled people.
7) Contribution with the salary of the people who work in the cooperative.
8) Broadcasting and advertising of the initiative.
This Project was also an example of synergetic and cooperative activity with NOG (The Foundation De Mari) and with the local government (Town Council of Savona).
