LETTER FROM L´ALTROMARE

The contribution from Parodi Apicultura first, Foundation Parodi then, started in spring 2010 when an ordinary institutional friendship with Sergio Lugaro, who was in those days President of the Counselling Commission in the City Council in Savona for the study in the removal of architectural barriers, and who is now City Councilman . He, then, put us in touch with gentle and sensitive engineer Santiago Herrero, who became since then valuable counsellor and encouragement for our work.
The previous years, being inspired by my thesis, together with some well-placed professionals in the social area, we had created the social cooperative class B called L’Altromare
A class B cooperative is mainly defined by two aspects: it is a non-profit company, and its statutory purpose (art. 1 L.381/91) is the inclusion to the job market of handicapped people
The project that the Foundation has always sustained is called “Scaletto senza scalini”; “Scaletto” comes from “scaletto of the fishermen” (the biggest and most famous free beach in Savona); “sin scalini” (i.e. with no stairs) clearly points out the complete absence of barriers that thanks to the organization and the material could be done.
During July and August, in this free beach, L’Altromare gives theses services:
1. Daily service of security and first aid
2. Daily service of laying out corridors and cleaning the beach
3. Daily service of reception and escorting to the sea to people with reduced mobility or in wheelchairs (we are the only ones in the beach-tourism area).
4. Daily service of web and pones to provide all the information and state in real time the daily number of people who comes to the beach
The cooperative still doesn´t have an own economic-finance autonomy, because it can’t sell goods and because it gives a total free service, so, on order to carry out this kind of activity, its only finance source is the contributions from its partners, Entities, Companies and Foundations, bearing in mind that the expenses for the equipment and the staff are high.
Parodi Apicultura has immediately believe in us, by giving us an economic support which was essential in helping us in the hard stage of star-up and in the next step of expansion and consolidation of our offer to the community.
In order to better explain the vision of Foundation Parodi, it is enough to say that the third main sponsor that helps us to develop our service only arrives in 2011
Thanks to Parodi Foundation we could develop professionally a sustained, reproducible and functional model of social cooperation, showing this way that with the lack of obstacles, disability doesn`t exist, and so, transform a public beach in a place of socialization for people with different abilities or not, where everybody could enjoy safety sunbathing with the support of gentle and professional people. The contribution of Parodi Foundation has made it possible in four years that more than 3500 people with motor abilities could sunbathe. For many of them that was their first time in the sea and many other didn’t remember have done it before. Thanks Parodi Foundation!!!
